Carolyn and Gary Schamburg
Gary Robert Schamburg Sr., 68, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, while vacationing in Italy, surrounded by his beloved wife and two sons.
Born on September 30, 1956, in Belleville, Illinois, Gary was the son of Theodore and Carol Schamburg. He graduated from Affton High School and the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979, where he earned a degree in History. Gary proudly served his country for 23 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His distinguished military career included assignments with the Berlin Brigade, 5th Special Forces Group, 101st Airborne Division during Desert Storm, and Military Airlift Command. He was also a U.S. Army Ranger. His commendations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal, among others. Following his military retirement, Gary continued his service as a contractor supporting Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base until 2019.
Gary was deeply committed to his community. He served as Community Manager at Americana Cove in St.
Petersburg and as Vice President on the Americana Cove Board of Directors. He was also a proud member of Ainad Shriners, Masonic Lodge #576 in O’ Fallon, Illinois, and the Valley of Southern Illinois Scottish Rite.
Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend. His greatest joy was his family, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He shared a deep and playful bond with his grandchildren, and his love for his sons and wife, Carolyn, was unwavering. Their 41-year marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
A passionate sportsman, Gary coached youth football and baseball and remained active in local initiatives in O’Fallon, IL, and St. Petersburg, FL. He was also a lifelong animal lover, known for his special bond with his dog pal, Gimli.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Carolyn; sons Gary Jr. (Cara) and lan; grandchildren Eloise (5) and Everett (3); mother Carol Schamburg; brothers Gregg (Bernie) and Theodore Jr. (Wendy); and many adoring nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and dear friends.
A burial with military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a celebration of Gary’s life from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Arnold VFW Post 2593.
In honor of Gary’s legacy of service, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (https://t2t.org) or Shriners Children’s Hospital (https://www.shrinerschildrens.org) in lieu of flowers. Your support in celebrating Gary’s life and values is deeply appreciated.
